Dementia introduction

According to HPB, dementia is an illness that leads to the decline of the brain and its abilities in judgement, language, planning, and behaviour. It can affect adults of any age, although it is more likely to occur in those above 65 years old.

There are 5 common types of dementia:

1. Alzheimer's Disease 

2. Vascular Dementia 

3. Lewy body Dementia 

4. Parkinson's Disease

5. Mixed Dementia

Dementia Symptom includes:

1. Memory Loss that Affects Day-to-Day Functions

2. Difficulty Doing Familiar Tasks

3. Confusion about Time and Place

4. Problems Communicating thoughts

5. Difficulty Planning or Solving Problems

6. Poor or Decreased Judgement

7. Misplacing things

8. Changes in Personality

9. Mood Swings

10. Withdrawal from work or Social activities

Most common misconceptions:

1. Dementia is part of normal aging

Even though the condition tends to affect those 65 years and above, it is not a normal phase of aging

 

2. Dementia is all about forgetfulness

Other than forgetfulness, it also affects personality as well as the ability to look after oneself. 

 

3. There is nothing I can do to help dementia

Taking part in mentally-stimulating games and undergoing treatments can help to prevent further deterioration of dementia. 

 

How to prevent dementia?

1. Avoid smoking and alcohol

2. Eating a balanced diet

3. Exercise regularly

4. Participating in social activities

How to communicate with dementia patients?

1. Keep words simple and easy to understand

2. Take the initiative to understand their needs and wants 

3. Show respect and patience

4. Offer comfort and companionship
